Title: "Teamwork - Where It Really Counts! Submarine
Operations
during the Cold War"
|
Submarines, and the lives of those who man them, have always been a subject of fascination. Much has been documented about the rigors of submarine life, the various changes in submarine warfare brought about by nuclear power, and the technical marvel that our submarines have become. Serving in submarines during a time when we were building submarines as fast as we could and sending them to sea to insure our supremacy beneath the sea, our presenter saw the impact on individuals and national resources that were required to maintain that edge. In his view, teamwork of unparalleled proportions was required to insure survival beneath the sea and retention of superiority against a capable and dedicated adversary. The complexity of the men and the machinery grew to meet the challenge to our dominance in the open ocean. This program will give us a glimpse |
Speaker: Capt. Charlie Mac Vean was born and raised
in New Jersey, where he met his wife in high school. He attended Dartmouth College, was commissioned the U.S. Navy and initially served on the destroyer, USS FORREST SHERMAN. Selected by the Navy for graduate school, he earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University in Nuclear Science and Engineering. Following nuclear power and submarine training, Dr. MacVean served in submarines for 16 years in the midst of the Cold War. Submarine service on USS TINOSA, USS GEORGE WASHINGTION, and USS PARCHE and as Commanding Officer, USS SEAWOLF was followed by his assignment as the Commodore for Submarine Development Group One, here in San Diego. His Exploits that included having entered
the submarine service shortly after our
loss of USS THRESHER, being a mid grade officer during the loss of
USS SCORPION, having command of SEAWOLF at the height of the Cold
War were recounted in the book, "Blindman's Bluff".
